i wanna be a good cook?

so im not gonna say i was always a chef in my family but i always had a special talent to not screw in the kitten like most inexperienced

but anyways , i wanna learn new recipes to improve my cook

i know how to do mac n cheese , spaghetti , garlic toasted bread , barbecue pastrami? obvious snacks , and my special , garlic creamy shrimps and recently learned garlic olive potato in the oven

anyways , i need more on my menu , with typical house condiments or whatever

pasta , meats , fishes , Mediterranean , classic , deserts and all those recipes are valid

thanks and up fingers for all recipes

Just pick a kind of food, and perfect it.
Learn to deal with meat. Chicken is inexpensive compared to other meats, start there. Fry one, roast one, learn what to do with chicken breasts.
I’m frying BBQ pork steaks right now.
Since you know how to cook spaghetti, cream sauce, garlic bread, time to branch out. Make a lasagna, learn about Italian side dishes and salads. Find and make an Italian dessert.
Try potatoes. Baked, twice baked, cheesy, home fried, french fried.
Try something fancy for breakfast, there are a lot of breakfast casseroles out there. And French toast, bread pudding, breakfast breads like banana nut bread.
And always learn at least one dish that is suitable for a potluck. Apple salad, macaroni salad.
Pick a website, choose something you are interested in, and go through those recipes. Find one that is within, or just beyond your skill level, and stay within budget. That is what I do, and I really have fun looking for something new and different. And I got some great recipes and the practice to make them by that way. I make my own cheesecake now, no need to pay a fortune for it at the store.
Easter is coming, find a menu and practice for that.
and whenever you can, watch the cooking shows on TV. PBS, Food network, sometimes their shows are beyond my capabilities, but boy do I learn! I watched Paula Deen make a caramel cake, and found the recipe on Food Network site and made it. And boy was it good!
Apple raisin breakfast bread pudding:
Ingredients
6 eggs 1 cup milk 1/2 cup heavy cream 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 (16 ounce) loaf cinnamon bread with raisins, cut into 1-inch cubes 2 Granny Smith apples – peeled, cored, and sliced 1 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 cup melted butter 1 Granny Smith apple – peeled, cored, and diced
Directions
Beat the eggs in a mixing bowl. Whisk in the milk, cream, vanilla extract, and nutmeg until evenly blended. Fold in the bread cubes and set aside until the bread soaks up the egg mixture, about 5 minutes. Place the sliced apples into a mixing bowl and sprinkle with brown sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter; toss to evenly coat. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and arrange the apple slices evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish; spoon the bread mixture over top. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.
Preheat an oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Sprinkle the diced apple over the bread pudding and cover again with the aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven until the bread is no longer soggy, about 40 minutes. Remove the foil and set the oven to Broil; broil until golden brown on top, about 5 minutes. Remove and let stand 5 to 10 minutes before serving

Twice baked mashed potatoes:
Ingredients
1/2 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped green pepper 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 4 cups mashed potatoes (prepared with milk and butter) 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, divided 1/4 cup crumbled cooked bacon 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper
Directions
In a small skillet, saute onion and green pepper in oil until tender. In a large bowl, combine the onion mixture, mashed potatoes, 1/2 cup cheese, bacon, salt and pepper. Spoon into a greased 2-qt. baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees F for 20-25 minutes or until cheese is melted.
Good luck!

Top 10 Side Dishes for Dinner

The main dish may be the star of the dinner show but side dishes are members of the all-important supporting cast. When planning the dinner menu, grain or potato based side dish recipes are often desired. When looking for recipe ideas, Continental offers a variety of side dishes that will complement any meal and are delicious when prepared as instructed on the package or when enhanced with creative additions of your own choosing. Some of these awesome side dish ideas include:

Pasta
1. Macaroni & Cheese is popular with both kids and adults. Super saucy or cheesy bacon macaroni can be served with any main dish to round out the meal.

2. Pastas with sauce are another favourite side dish choice. Bacon carbonara, sour cream & chives or alfredo are all good complements to a variety of meats.

3. For a more exotic pasta option, try couscous from North Africa. Some types of couscous blends include Mediterranean Vegetables & Herbs and Moroccan Spices, both of which go especially well with veal or lamb.

Rice
4. Rice is a diet staple around the world. Whether served as a side dish or used as the base for main dish recipe ideas, chicken, satay or oriental fried rice each provides a versatile addition to any menu.

5. The rices of the world collection include Italian dun dried tomato & basil, Spanish roasted vegetables, Thai coconut & lime and Indian mild curry. When looking for side dish recipes that add an international flavour to the meal, be sure to try these exotic rice dish ideas.

6. Aborio rice can be used to make risotto cheese & bacon or mushroom & garlic creamy rice options, which can be ready in just 20 minutes using packaged side dish products.

Potato Mash
7. Potatoes are a staple food in many areas around the world and are a popular dinner side dish. When time is short, serve either home style or smooth & creamy potato mash with your main meal.

Other Side Dishes
8. Steamed vegetables are common as a side dish, usually served in addition to pasta, rice or potatoes.

9. Green salad is another popular side dish choice. Whether a simple variety based on just a few ingredients or something more elaborate that includes a variety of vegetables, a fresh green salad enhances a meal in a way that cooked vegetables cannot.

10. Fruit provides a refreshing change when added to the dinner menu. Served individually or in combination, side dish recipes that contain fruit are a welcome addition.

Why has most of the European countries,latest being France , banned genetically engineered seeds and food?

products from their country’s, and their still being grown here in the USA? This includes beef products with bgh’s, milk, meat, etc.! Has the FDA’s eyes been blinded by the $$$ and employees that work for them that used to work for Monsanto corp., the largest manufacturer in the world of these products?
4 answers so far and three have no clue!

I don’t agree with any of the answers so far, because I have spent weeks researching this topic! What I have discovered is that way back (in the good ‘ol Clinton years) – we put corporate Monsanto people into government jobs such as the FDA. Monsanto had been working on genetically engineered seeds for years, throwing out the bad data in their “research” to prove it safe. Scientists who objected were paid off or fired. The FDA then said… hey Monsanto, you do the research and let us FDA people know if it’s safe. Monsanto said “It’s safe”. FDA said ok. No 3rd party testing or questioning of the data or results. Europe however, countries that LOOK OUT FOR THE WELFARE OF THEIR CITIZENS enlisted independent researchers to see if the DNA modified seeds were safe for animals, humans and the ecology. THEY SAID NO (at first, now they are caving slowly) The effects have been devastating!

Animals grazing in the GE fields die, people become ill. The pollen from GE plants will kill monarch butterflies, bees, and “good bacteria”.

Monsanto also helps put growth hormones in our milk – with dangerous effects. And TV stations will lie.

http://www.notmilk.com/monsantoland.html

So to answer your question – They banned it because their studies showed there were dangers to human life. Monsanto has bought many governments to accept their defective products. We are now going to force Iraq to use GE seeds!

http://www.organicconsumers.org/politics/iraq121305.cfm

Money talks. GE isn’t safe. The rest is propaganda.

WWI Recipes for school project?

I’m doing a project on rationing food during the First World War, and I would like to make an authentic European dish (can’t be American – I’m taking AP Euro History). I looked up some recipes online, but none of them are dishes really made on the home front. Does anybody have any website links or know any recipes to fit this description?

You could make any kind of basic, yeast-leaven bread for your project as all soldiers were given bread as part of their rations. Below I included a recipe for egg biscuits, which were occasionally part of the German food rations during WWI.

As an example of the type of food distributed to troops, the British daily ration for 1914 consisted of the following items:
* 1 1/4 lb fresh or frozen meat, or 1 lb preserved or salt meat
* 1 1/4 lb bread, or 1 lb biscuit or flour
* 4 oz. bacon
* 3 oz. cheese
* 5/8 oz. tea
* 4 oz. jam
* 3 oz. sugar
* 1/2 oz salt
* 1/36 oz. pepper
* 1/20 oz. mustard
* 8 oz. fresh or 2 oz. dried vegetables
* 1/10 gill lime juice (if fresh vegetables not issued);
* 1/2 gill rum (at discretion of commanding general)
* up to 2 oz. tobacco per week (at discretion of commanding general)

In contrast the German daily ration for 1914 comprised the following:
* 750g (26 1/2 oz) bread, or 500g (17 1/2 oz) field biscuit, or 400g (14 oz.) egg biscuit
* 375g (13 oz.) fresh or frozen meat, or 200g (7 oz) preserved meat
* 1,500g (53 oz.) potatoes, or 125-250g (4 1/2-9 oz.) vegetables, or 60g (2 oz.) dried vegetables, or 600g (21 oz.) mixed potatoes and dried vegetables
* 25g (9/10 oz.) coffee, or 3g (1/10 oz.) tea
* 20g (7/10 oz.) sugar
* 25g (9/10 oz.) salt
* two cigars and two cigarettes or 1 oz. pipe tobacco, or 9/10 oz. plug tobacco, or 1/5 oz. snuff
* at discretion of commanding officer: 0.17 pint spirits, 0.44 pint wine, 0.88 pint beer.

Recipe for Egg Biscuits:
Ingredients
* 4 cupfuls flour
* 2 teaspoonfuls baking powder
* 1/4 cupful butter
* 2 eggs
* 1 1/2 cupfuls milk
* 2 teaspoonfuls sugar
* 1/2 teaspoonful salt

Directions
Sift the dry ingredients, rub in the butter, and make into a dough with the beaten egg and milk. Turn out on a baking board, roll into a sheet and mold into biscuits. Bake fifteen minutes in a quick oven.

Good luck!
